Is Airalo eSIM the answer to Brexit and roaming charges?

Hold on… Roaming Charges?

For those unaware, thanks to the EU the roaming charges ended on 15 June 2017. Now you can use your mobile phone, the same way you do back at home when travelling Europe, without incurring any fees. You just pay your domestic rates. With Brexit ahead, roaming charges may come back for the British (or people on British phone plans). Is Airalo eSIM the future to find a way around the roaming fees, not just in the EU but around the whole globe?

Let’s find out..

What is eSIM?

It’s quite funny for me, because eSIM is exactly something that one of my best friends have came up with as an idea a few years back. We were discussing new advancements in mobile phone technology, and talking about sim locks. We just couldn’t figure out why in the 21st century, where we have smart watches that could call and phones like computers, why we still need a little tiny piece of plastic to keep us connected.

So he said why can this not be built in and when you buy a phone, you just choose the carrier from the menu in the phone? Simple, right?

Well there it is.

eSIM stands for embedded SIM card. The exact functionality is what me and my friend were discussing a few years back. You can choose a local carrier and pay local rates, when you travel around the globe. Airalo is allowing you to shop around in your phone, without needing to speak the local language and without queuing in shops.

The most important as well, without needing to switch around small SIM cards and re-starting your phone.

So because this eSIM is embedded into the phone, you do not need to install anything new into your device. Meaning you can leave your current SIM card in, so people can still reach you on your domestic phone number.

However because it is a new technological advancement that is built into the phones (also some new tablets and laptops), it is mainly implemented in the recent models such as:

  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max,
  • iPhone XR
  • Google Pixel 3
  • Google Pixel 4

    What is Airalo?

Airalo is a bit like a comparison site, a store where you can choose different carriers. You could compare it to Carphone Warehouse, but without a physical store and with just one SIM card already in your phone. So really simple and convenient.

They support eSIMs in over 100 countries all over the world and have made it easy for you to access data plans no matter where you are. Great for travellers and season workers.

So is this an answer to EU roaming charges after Brexit?

For some definitely. If you are on pay as you go or a 30 day rolling contract in the UK, where you can flexibly discontinue to use the domestics provider then Airalo is a great alternative.

However if you are in a fixed contract, you may still have to pay for your plan at home and use Airalo as a cheap addition to avoid tremendous roaming bill when you get back home.

Either way, if it is the case that roaming charges will come back or you are travelling outside of the EU Airalo is the place to go to for peace of mind 😌
