With new favourable legislation all around the world to globalise and connect everyone, it is easier than ever to travel.
However have you ever thought it could be completely free?
Well I have a surprise for you. You can travel to your dream destination, and completely free of currency transaction you can find a place to stay.
So let’s dive into it.
What is the secret?
As you can probably guess from the image, I will be talking about couches. What’s more, free couches in every corner of the world.
I am really excited to share with you the ultimate platform to free travel. It is called Couch Surfing! And no, I do not get paid from Couch Surfing, so if you click on the link I will not be getting anything.
The link is just to take you to the website to show you more about it.
What is Couch Surfing?
Couch Surfing is a platform where people offer their own homes, “couches”, beds and accommodation free of charge as a good gesture to travellers.
This offers an experience that money cannot buy, as you are interacting with the locals. So you can have an authentic feel to what the destination is really like.
No fake culture shows, no stereotyping, just the real deal of the modern society. The idea of the Couch Surfing is to connect the world. It is there to educate, share your journey, your story and your life.
This can also work as a place to meet new friends in your city. It offers a community of people. With weekly language exchanges, dance classes, hikes and dinners.
So if you are trying to learn a new language, know something more about other cultures or meet some friends then Couch Surfing is the place to go to.
How big is Couch Surfing?
Couch Surfing is a platform that works all over the globe. It has a community of over 14 million people, and operates in more than 200,000 cities.
This idea and platform started in 2004 and has grown significantly, providing travellers with amazing opportunities to free travel and new friends. The company call them “friends you haven’t met yet”.
Is it Safe?
This is because it is hosted by people who are not professionals most of the time. You are renting their own homes, and most of the time it is not as safe as hotels for example.
While there is a ton of positive reviews of Couch Surfing, and a lot of them say it is safe. There is a number of people that came across negative experiences.
However, it is kind of like a dating site. Before you decide to meet someone and stay with them, you get to see their photos, bio and reviews.
The host will tell you what things they are interested in, who they are and you have the option to chose if you would like to get to know this person.
You do not have to offer anything in exchange, and you should follow your gut. You should read reviews, and message the hosts before meeting up. There is a whole section about safety on the Couch Surfing website. So make sure you read about it.
What are the downsides?
Some of the downsides of Couch Surfing is that you are not a client, but a guest. Which is quite important to remember about.
With Couch Surfing, the hosts can cancel without any obligation of any compensation. You do have to make good effort and build rapport with the hosts and ask them if they would spare some space for you. So potentially you may need a plan B, if you cannot find anyone you get along with or to avoid being stranded with last minute cancellations.
Very often with Couch Surfing you only get to stay in one place for 2 – 3 nights, because again you are not a client. Someone is doing you a favour.
Lastly, Couch Surfing is about making sure people enjoy your company. So you cannot be messy like you could in a hotel room, you have to respect their privacy, and your privacy can be limited.
However hey ho, you are literally not paying for anything. Very often the host would also offer you something to drink or eat so it is common sense to treat these people with respect.
